Once again it is obvious to see how artworks of the past can influence fashion photography of today. Here, Rodney Smith's photograph has a clear and striking resemblance to Jean-Honoré Fragonard's famous painting 'The Swing'.
Which one do you prefer?

Love this connection you've found. Brilliant photograph and love the artwork itself. x Dusty Petals.
ReplyDeleteI find it hard to compare the two and say I like one over the other, even though the connection is apparent. I see the painting to carry a different significance from the photograph most notably in the men and lack there of, respectively. The painting shows a coy, flirtatious, and secretive woman who at the same time is very bearing towards the men. The photograph shows a woman capable of managing the swing alone, but carries her flirtation on with the camera and whomever comes across the photo, be it man or woman. It brings forth a very modernized touch to the interpretation of the painting. Both are beautiful, and I love how the photograph mimics the angelic aura through the lighting.
ReplyDeleteI think it's very difficult to decide the one I like better, because they both look equaly gorgeous, but express different things. a fashion photography wants to give a much different information than an actual painting art piece. Either way, the influence is obvious, and the work is stuning!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the comments girls. You bring some interesting perspective to the post. And although similar, they are both so different to make a true comparison. Personally I love the energy and flirtatiousness of the artwork. It illustrates a particular time in history which we can never be apart of - there is something special in that.

This is a very striking similarity! It is a great reminder how there is so much inspiration we can get from the Arts. I like both for different reasons and they catch my attention in different ways :-)

ReplyDeleteOh my goodness- both are striking and beautiful. They are inspirational and carry a strong symbolism, which I like and respect.
